The Eritrean people will indeed be the final arbiter of it all. Thanks to the Internet, it won't be necessary to tax the reader with yet another piece on what happened that fateful evening. .... ERITREA TIKDEM Russom Mesfun September 22, 2001 "Asmara, my Asmara, I have come to set you free. Your children have paid dearly, for your dignity and honor…I have come to dry your tears; no weeping anymore, not as long as your youth is alive. Your troubles are over, for you have mothered heroes." .... Proceed with Caution Russom Mesfun September 17, 2001 Violence of cataclysmic proportions visited America on Tuesday morning shattering perhaps permanently the sense of security in the nation while claming the lives of thousands of innocent people. Civilization built over centuries seemed almost helpless and vulnerable to a well-choreographed attack. Within a couple of hours, an entire city came to a standstill as the nation watched in horror. .... The Mouse that Roared Russom Mesfun September 07, 2001 The newspaper boy wants to supply each of his regulars with enough copies, but he runs out of them faster than he would have liked. It would have meant a few more coins for him .... Man of the Hour A Satire Russom Mesfun July 20, 2001 Lusaka, Zambia -- Africa is once again dancing to a new tune with a fantastic rhythm to it, a mélange of melodic sounds beating as one and promising a new era. .... Now and Then Russom Mesfun July 12, 2001 The following article was written in the fall of 1985, a time when the world fed the predators and not the prey; it was a time when the world looked the other way as merciless Ethiopian planes played hide-and-seek with Eritrea's children. .... Season of Insincerity Russom Mesfun July 03, 2001 It's the third rail of Eritrean politics: If you have any common sense above your shoulders, you wouldn't want to ever get near the darn thing. The former ambassador to the UN, Mr. Haile Menkerious, said that he doesn't even want to touch it with a seven-foot pole, in so many words that is. .... Eritreans Petition Leaders Russom Mesfun June 22, 2001 In a growing concern over the current political situation at home, hundreds of Eritreans from around the world signed a petition urging the nation's leaders to resolve the crisis peacefully.... Elitlea’s Own Russom Mesfun June 19, 2001 At a recent baby christening, a three-year-old was contentedly playing with her electronic toys as the guests conversed on the latest goings-on in their country. No, they were not talking about George Bush. They consider America a place they had ended up by default. Home is Eritrea, and that’s why for the next few hours, the subject was, you guessed it…. ... A Crisis of Expectations Russom Mesfun June 11, 2001 It was an accident waiting to happen, and sooner or later it was going to surface. As is always the case with people who aspire to better their lives, Eritreans too have opted to move forward as they come to grips with the fact that their leaders might have gone astray and veered off course. ... Where Everybody Knows Your Name Russom Mesfun May 24, 2001 You know that you have made it to the Land almost as soon as the plane kisses the tarmac. All of a sudden almost everyone at the receiving end of the airport looks like you. ... Don’t Punish Me With Brutality Russom Mesfun May 8, 2001 Forget reparations and apologies for slavery; don’t even worry about the mule and forty acres I was promised like everyone else. Officer, can you please just let me drive home in peace? I am so tired of being treated like a second-class citizen and searched like a criminal. ... A Diplomatic Diplomat Russom Mesfun April 27, 2001 Oakland, CA -- Ambassador Girma Asmerom stopped by the Bay Area briefly last Sunday to introduce himself to the community and say hello to friends. Eritrea’s new man in Washington did not waste anytime embarking on what was a clear charm offensive. ... A Budding Local Press Russom Mesfun April 20, 2001 A lively and assertive press has emerged in Eritrea's political horizons, serving notice to friend and foe that it has come to play and intends to be taken seriously. If it had appeared shy and even timid previously, it was merely trying to make sure that its genuine intentions were not mistaken for lack of patriotism or loyalty.... Chiluba says Hello, Zambia says Goodbye Russom Mesfun April 16, 2001 Like most of his contemporaries across the African continent, President Frederick Chiluba of Zambia is in love with his job. In fact, he loves it so much that he wants to keep it -- for five more years. ... LOVE YA DUBYA Russom Mesfun April 02, 2001 What a difference an election makes. Washington is still gaga over Dubya. Only a few months ago, everyone was fretting that the nation didn’t have much of a choice in the two leading candidates, W. and Gore. ... The Eritrean Housekeeper Russom Mesfun March 26, 2001
It was the most reckless thing Selam had ever done, one she would regret for a long, long time. She did not know what had possessed her, why she would put her job in jeopardy. What in the world was she thinking, an alien in a hostile terrain? ... Summer in The City BY Russom Mesfun March 19, 2001 Chances are you have been to Eritrea at least once after independence, if not more. It will probably cost you an arm and a leg to get there these days. But once you get home, I am sure you'll be rewarded handsomely. ... The Accidental Columnist: Russom Mesfun March 10, 2001
A handful of Eritreans, about half a dozen or so, were enrolled at the University of Massachusetts in Boston. Eternally grateful to the U.S. for the shelter -- and the opportunity to study in peace -- we quietly went about our schoolwork virtually unnoticed by the rest of our American schoolmates. From our conversations, they must have gathered that we were from Africa. Some would even mistake us for Ethiopians, the only place they had heard of before, perhaps on TV. ... Erespora, A Column is Born February 12, 2001 I have humbly accepted Asmarino.coms invitation to launch a new column, which, in a way, could not have happened at a better time. Eritrea, the promise of its people at home and abroad, is marching steady, a bit shy at times but it will in due time learn to plant its feet like never before. The distant news of discord will eventually metamorphose into necessary hurdles that have to be overcome on the messy road toward a democratic society. Eritrea will find its way. Future articles will delve into the lives and aspirations of the Eritreans in the Diaspora, which I have, henceforth, decided to refer as The Erespora. As a beneficiary of many articles written by Eritreans, in perhaps insignificant ways I would like to pitch in the effort and return the favor. As should have been evident in previous articles, I am particularly fascinated by the human condition, and, naturally, I am partial to the Eritreans. However, you will also be presented with reflections on Africa, or America or anywhere for that matter, on the good, the bad, and the ugly. And, yes, for humanitarian reasons, the articles will be as short and as concise as possible. I do hope you will enjoy the ride. Fraternally yours, |
