Why writers write? The New York Times has a regular column which prints on this subject. This is why I write and it has taken me a decade to put it in paper. Particular reference is made in the process that made "Blankets of Sand" in the hope this will inspire those who are interested in Eritrean literarture to search for past works

Words have always fascinated me. As a child I used to sit and have coffee with elderly women in the community. I felt depressed to think that one could not write all their stories because no matter what could be edited out, the politics of Eritrean reality had to be taken into account. Censorship against writers was strict and thoroughly enforced. Unexpected government house search for Eritrean guerrilla pamphlets was always a possibility. ...

On July 20, 2000, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) notified the government of Eritrea that the authorities in Ethiopia have "refused" to accept the return of 1,100 of their nationals through an ICRC-sponsored repatriation mission. The Eritrean response as to the moral and legal ramifications mainly addressed to the international community is ironically respectful. ...
