“ All thoughtful Eritreans owe it to their country and to themselves to persist in raising hard questions demanding satisfactory answers from those in power. Shaking hands but not hearts
Peace is more than the absence of war

By Habtom Yohannes
Dec 18, 2000

The late emperor Haile Selassie used to say: "religion is a private matter but a nation belongs to all". But as you are aware by now the word of the powerful is not eternal. It changes by the day according to the interests of those in power. When followers of some of the Pentecostal Churches in Ethiopia refused to register themselves for military service Haile Selassie started to arrest them. ...

Trust between parties pivotal for conflict resolution, sustainable peace and development
Ethiopia as well as Eritrea should consider a government of national unity

By Habtom Yohannes
November 13, 2000

“Most conflicts feature complex interactions of different forces. Some are sustained by the separation of hostile groups, so that antagonisms are reinforced by ignorance and suspicion fuelled by a lack of contact between contending parties. The traditional approach of the international community in such situations has been the imposition of “peace-keeping forces” between the groups - such as those stationed in Cyprus, Bosnia, or Lebanon - a useful but blunt and surface-oriented instrument which often does not address the underlying needs of the groups in question.” Democracy and Deep-Rooted Conflict: Options for Negotiators, p.31, Emphasis mine. ...

A question of mentality
And not of constitutions and elections

By Habtom Yohannes
October 29, 2000

Some people are very allergic to the word "democracy" and to all other words that do relate to the word "democracy". People who get nervous when they hear the words democracy, accountability, human-rights and good-governance are either traumatized by this terms or they have something to hide. Please note here, that I am not referring here to similar terms of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank.

Powerless defending the powerful
Do the powerful listen to them?

By Habtom Yohannes
October 23, 2000

A lot has happened this week. The respectful 13 Group of Berlin, including Dawit Mesfin, painful for those who hate him, has received an invitation from President Isaias Afwerki to come to Asmera and discuss the issues they have raised in their "letter of October 3, 2000. Last Wednesday a majority in the Dutch Parliament decided to contribute more than 11000 marines to the United Nations Mission to Eritrea and Ethiopia (UNMEE). On the same day six of the eight Eritrean journalists, who were arrested five days ago during, according to one of the presidential advisors, Mr. Yemane Ghebremeskel, "a periodic swoop to catch draft dodgers"

Independence as trade mark of civic society
Strong civic society in Eritrea's interest

By Habtom Yohannes
September 24, 2000

"Within the state, political action is motivated by means of command backed by the implicit sanctions of violence. Within civil society, political initiatives arise on a voluntary basis either because actors perceive a material advantage or because they are motivated by commitment to ethical or political value. Although the state may posses a legitimate claim to the monopoly of violence, it cannot claim exclusive dominion over economic or ethical life. Yet, economic interests and moral values are key poles around which political activity regularly clusters. These are the province of civil society." M. Bratton, "Civil society and political transistions", in J W Harbeson et al, Civil Society and the State in Africa. Emphasis mine. ...

September 4, 2000

"When all this happened, we either kept quiet or became committed apologists and drummers for the leader. Even when PFDJ spread its tentacles into the Diaspora community, we welcomed it. The regime's ambassadors became community cadres. The autonomy of the Diaspora community was gutted, its individuality undermined, and its existence reduced to the status of a mere cash cow, with only duties and without rights. When all this happened, some of us chose co-optation rather than confrontation with the Eritrean leader in order to improve our standing with him, some of us sat on the fence to see which way the wind would blow, and still others of us retreated into oblivion. So directly or indirectly, we all have contributed to the present plight of our people." Dr. Okbazghi Yohannes in "Lessons Still Unlearnt" August 28, Asmarino.com ...
