Political pluralism is healthy for Eritrea but it may prove to be counterproductive if it expresses itself in the diaspora.

Developing communities in the Eritrean context in the diaspora is a complex process that has elements of the past, challenges of the present and hopes for the future. There are multiple factors that shape how communities can either be healthy or stagnant.

But first, it would be interesting to explore the boundaries of community or communities. Certainly, we can identify ways of characterizing and defining communities. Eritreans have community associations that revolve around politics, or a mix of politics and community development. ...

The Eritreans outside Eritrea, like few other diaspora communities, have unique features that spell out their strong relationship with the home country, Eritrea. While the history of the armed struggle itself is replete with examples of a diaspora actively engaged in the destiny of the land, the last two years have been exceptionally revealing in terms of the role Eritreans in the far reaches of the globe played to prevent Ethiopia from dismantling the hard-won independence.
